I have heard of the legendary luck of the Tampa Bay Area starting from the moment I moved to the area. According to legend, there are a great many Native American burial mounds throughout the state of Florida, and, because of the blessing placed upon them when they were created. Many people believe that these burial mounds and the blessing to go with them are the reason that so many devastating hurricanes have narrowly missed the St. Petersburg Area. While this sounds like a nice idea, I don’t know if I’m willing to bet my life on it. Especially in recent years, Tampa and Saint Petersburg have seen more hurricane damage than in the past decades.
The other theory I have heard has to do with location and geography. In years past, it is believed that pirates liked to dock their ships in Tampa bay because of its protection from winds and storms. While this Ancient Native American blessing could go back that far, I think it is easier for me to wrap my head around the landforms and water masses interrupting and changing wind patterns near the Tampa bay.
Stay safe, and evacuate yourself, loved ones, and pets during storm season!
